The Township roads are the primarily responsibility of the Township. These roads are typically gravel surfaces including granite gravel on roads with higher travel rates and Class 5 gravel on less traveled roadway surfaces.
Grading is usually done after a soaking rain to be most effective. Touch-up grading is more frequently done at more heavily traveled intersection. Each year the Township spreads some granite and Class 5 on roadways surfaces, usually on a schedule of 3-5 years as well as on areas that need more attention.
Dust coating is provided on all roads of the Township and is performed by a contractor for completion in June of each year. This is an outsourced activity, thus timing may need to be altered due to rainfall, which is needed to activate the dust coating material and the contractor’s schedule.
Snowplowing is usually started after a snowstorm has ended. Extended periods of snowfall may require additional plowing to keep roads open for passage of emergency vehicles. The Township road maintenance person provides plowing and sanding services for timely and safe travel. Plowing route sequence is rotated for efficiency and equal treatment with regard for all township residents.
Other maintenance such as road rebuilding projects, culvert replacement, ditch cleaning, and tree trimming are at times contracted out and supervised by the Township road maintenance person.
The Township also maintains all Township road signs, mows the shoulders, sprays for noxious weeds along the roadside, and cleans up illegal dumping.
